General Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Terms

  • PageRank:
Google = PageRank. PageRank (PR) is how Google rates websites. PageRank ranges from PR N/A, and PR0 to PR10. Shiny new web sites start at PR N/A. Mega content websites like Google and Yahoo are PR9. PR10 = God. :)

  • OBL:
Other Back Links is a term to describe the number of links on a web page. Posting your link on a page with lots of links (aka, high OBL) is less effective SEO wise than a quality page with a few links (aka, low OBL).

  • Link Juice:
Slang for the amount of PageRank given to you by another website. Get yourself linked on a PR9 and you'll have a great deal more "link juice" than a link from your Grandma's new knitting blog. Likewise, if you post your link on a web page with high OBL you will have less page rank than if your link is on a site with low OBL.

  • DoFollow Links:
Is an HTML tag. A link may be set to dofollow or nofollow. As you can imagine, Dofollow links pass more link juice to your website than nofollow links.

  • NoFollow:
Is the opposite of dofollow, but contrary to what you might think still pass some link juice to your website. In theory, two nofollow equals one dofollow link. To summarize:
  • High PR is better than Low PR, Low OBL is better than High OBL, and Dofollow is better than No follow.
You've just learned most of the basic SEO terms. Hoorah! See, not that hard.

What are some different SEO Link Terms and SEO Techniques?

  • Homepage Contextual Links:
The links on the homepage of high PR sites are link juice nirvana.

  • Links from .edu and .gov websites:
Because websites ending in .edu and .gov are often more credible than others, links from dot edu or dot gov sites tend to have more PR and link juice.

  • Wiki Links:
Writing an article with links to your website on a high PR Wiki is the holy grail of SEO.

  • Blog Comments:
Google loves blogs, particular those blogs with up to date information and original content.

  • Article Submission:
Article submission websites are a great way to get your website both respect and quality link backs. Just make sure your content is original (or mostly so).

  • Social Bookmarking:
If you are big into social media, Google plus, Facebook and other social media sites allow others to rate you. If you like this article,
    Please Share ♥

  • Web 2.0 Properties:
Think WordPress, Blogger.com, etc., and you'll have described Web 2.0 properties. Take advantage of Web 2.0 properties to market your website.

  • Forum Posts:
Fits into the not such a bad idea to do everyday category. Embed your link within the text of your post, or within the signature of the post. Can be valuable if your posts are well received by others; not so much if you post your links in the context of obvious self promotion (being banned is no fun).

  • Coupon Sites:
Love 'em or hate 'em, coupon sites will help you beat the competition; in quality link backs if nothing else.

  • Aged Domains:
Old domain names with lots of quality backlinks will give you some nice link juice. For some this is a business unto itself (aka, cyber squatting, et al).

  • Social Network Sites:
Google Plus, FaceBook, Twitter and others are the future of the Internet (like it or not). You need to keep your social media presence active, particularly if you can obtain lots of "friends" for some nice content rich back linking.

  • Shopping Comparison Sites:
The gold for eCommerce sites. Pricescan, Shopping.Google.com and others are websites which link back to your product pages. You must research this if you have a large stock of items for sale.

  • Blog Roll Links:
Much like a homepage contextual link, except generally found only on blogs. Again, most helpful if you can get on the blog roll of a high PR site.

  • Profile Link:
Profile links are a no-brainer. Just do it for some sweet link juice.

  • Press Release:
While expensive, the nice thing about press releases are that they tend not to go away as quickly as other transient links in blogs and the like. And you have the possibility of being famous for a day if you are lucky.
